Carboreal — Finland
A Finnish carbon-sink company turning drained peat fields into verified, long-term forests — featured this month for its transparency, third-party certification, and its newly dedicated Trammell S. Crow Forest.
Rooting hope, one tree at a time
Carboreal Oy is a Finnish company that plants diverse, biodiverse forests on land unsuited for farming — often reclaiming drained peatlands that were, until planting, active sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Its carbon units are generated from scientifically verified, independently certified carbon capture, and the company reports that in a single season it has generated more than 230,000 tonnes of verified carbon credits, roughly comparable to the annual emissions of a mid-size Finnish city.
Carboreal is led by CEO and co-founder Salomo Vilén, an entrepreneur with a background in organic farming and forest bioenergy, alongside Chairman of the Board Janne Saarikko. Under Vilén's leadership the company has scaled quickly, reaching an estimated €11.3 million in revenue within two years, while continuing to invest in more precise measurement — including a partnership with Cense Analytics to improve soil carbon measurement accuracy.
The Trammell S. Crow Forest
Announced in December 2025 as part of a partnership between Carboreal and The Environmental Xperience at EarthX, the "EarthX Forest" project converts a former peat field in Rovaniemi, Lapland, into a boreal carbon sink.
Why it's named for Trammell S. Crow
The forest is dedicated to Trammell S. Crow, founder of EarthX and a longtime American philanthropist and environmental leader. In 2019 he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, an award whose past recipients include Presidents Ronald Reagan and Joe Biden, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai.
The forest is formally registered in the Finnish Land Registry under the name Trammell S. Crow and is protected for a minimum of 70 years — making it one of relatively few forests in Finland registered under an individual's name as a living environmental legacy.

Why this project type matters
Drained peatlands are among the most overlooked sources of emissions in the Nordic countries — dried peat soil continues to release stored carbon for as long as it stays drained and unforested. Rewetting or reforesting former peat fields flips that dynamic, turning a long-running emissions source into an active carbon sink. Scientific verification
Carbon capture is calculated from Finnish field data, forestry research, and long-term ecological analysis rather than generic regional averages.
Independent certification
The project holds ISO 14064-2 certification from Kiwa Inspecta, an internationally accredited verification body — see our Rating Institutes page for how this differs from a registry or a rating agency.
Legal permanence
Registration in Finland's official land registry for a 70-year minimum gives the project a permanence guarantee stronger than many voluntary-market forestry projects carry.
